Dad and I hit the water between 9 and 10am. Air temp was still about 42 degrees with a nice Shabbona breeze. Started over in the NMZ, after about an hour things got going. I was casting my firetiger super shad rap up in the trees, when SMASH…. “Fish !!” I said over my shoulder as I heaved into my second hookset. This boy was heavy.. lots heavier than the 38 and 40" that I’ve had recently. He started peeling my drag, heading right for a big tangle of stumps. I laid into him hard and turned him back towards me. “Money in the Bank”, I thought, nothing between him and me but open water. 5 seconds later, CLUNK, from out of nowhere, a sunken stick about as big around as my arm grabbed onto my shad rap and my fish. For 3 or 4 seconds, as I franticly tried to stomp on the bowmount controls, I could see the big green flash of a thrashing muskie just under the surface. Then the water got really calm, …..and there was nothing on my line except a well chewed lure, still socked into the stump. Pure Agony.
I think I’ll right a book called, “The Fine Art of Losing Muskies.”
A few hours later we saw some guys hook one trolling by the deep trees, but it got off at the boat as they went for the net. I couldn’t tell what they were using or how big the fish was, but with the way sound travels over water, we could tell that they were mildly disappointed.
Towards evening, I ran into MUSKYMAN at the NMZ. As we were BS-ing, BIG musky started rolling, thrashing and even jumping 100% out of the water all around us. But aside from a dink that shook me off on a stump (yeah, twice in the same day), we didn’t connect with anything. Muskie were mocking us.
I’ll be heading down to Evergreen next week to take my nephews muskie fishing. I won’t be back to Shabbona for a week and a half. Hey MUSKYMAN, save at least one for me.
Good Luck Everybody,
Kevin W
