Slept in today, and got to the lake around 10am. Things looked great. Gloomy clouds, mild breeze, Big Fish was just written all over the lake.
Started by cutting my finger open launching the boat, then proceeded to flood the engine trying to start it for 5 minutes before realizing that my 5 year old son had flipped the kill switch while playing in the boat last night. So I decided to just drift the shoreline by the boat launch until the engine dried out a little. I put on a new topwater lure, right out of the box, a "Doc" in the tennassee shad pattern (looks like a giant zara spook). On my 4th or 5th cast up near the weed edge... Swooosh!!! A nice muskie rocketted out of the weeds and charged my lure with a big splash... I choked... I guess with the frustration of the morning I just wasn't concentrating.. I committed the cardinal sin of topwater fishing... Rule # 1 : Don't set the hook until the fish actually BITES THE LURE.... I'd like to say that the fish missed the bait, but if I had instant replay I'd bet that I jerked it right away from him...
Anyway, water was stained with about a foot of visibility, weeds dying fast, water temp 62 degrees at 6 inches. No other strikes or sightings besides a 13 inch bass that thought it was a good idea to tangle with a Mepps Muskie Killer. I was chased off the lake by lightening before noon. This should be a great weekend for muskies.
Good Luck Everyone,
Kevin W
