I was recently out with my brother. Here's a pic of what he landed: a TRUE 47" muskie. A real beast that was released.
I saw the picture of JAB's friends muskie (41"????). I know pictures can be deceiving, however, it's hard to imagine JAB's muskie was only 6" shorter. Maybe it's just me? Anyone agree?
I'm not putting anyone down, however, I do believe the tape measure may have stretched.

Was that out of Shabbona??

Danner,

Great looking fish. it sure does dwarf my friend's, but could maybe the angle at which I took the picture as well as how I'm holding the fish have anything to do with it looking so small compared to your brother's??

I use one of those floating 60" poles - not a tape measure, so it's not like the tape could have gotten bent and read longer... But still, did you really have to make that comment about my buddy's fish?? Geeze, we're no experts - but can't we be proud of the fish? I just don't appreciate your post, but your brother's fish looks great!

JAB,

I'm not putting the muskie down, however, I think this is a great example of how fish lengths are exagerated. Just be proud of it and don't submit lengths that are not accurate or not even close. I don't think the angle or how you're holding the muskie makes THAT much difference. Just think about it - how wide is your body?

Yes, Nate this fish was caught from Shab, near the No Motor Zone.

Cool........the reason I was asking was it just looked darker than most fish that I have caught out of shabbona. Great fish.

Ok, ok, I'm not one to bicker, but I did not exaggerate on that fish. And, as for the width of my body, I am a weightlifter with quite a "wide" upper frame - any credit there? I would not have submitted the length - or worse yet - lied about it, were it not true.

But again, your fish definitely dwarfs that of my friend's and I hope one day I can catch one that big. Also looks like you have a great-looking boat too, maybe I'll get one of those too one day!

Sorry, Jab, no credit there either.

Ok, it seems I just won't win with you.

I guess I have no credit on this board from now on, I apologize for ruining the integrity of all honest, hardworking muskie fishermen. I just must be blind since I can't read a ruler the right way. Or I lied. In that case, I just wouldn't have posted then there'd be no debate.

Danner, good luck, and I hope you feel tough belittling someone else's fish who - admittedly - is much smaller than the one you and your brother caught.

YOU WIN

Anyone else want to comment on this - or do you all think I lied?!?!

This thread has just turned ridiculous.

Woa folks.............whats the big deal here, they are both nice fish and I'm sure both of you are very proud of them. Its not worth arguing about.

You guys are right - thank you for putting me back in line and reminding me to be happy we caught ANY size muskie. I apologize for bickering like a little school girl. Happy hunting!

Wow with posts like these I cant wait to post pix of the next Muskie I catch from Shabbs! JAB personaly I DO think your fish is 41'' because you cant go by the two photos. The 47'' fish is being held out much farther from the guys body and he is pushing the tail end out farther than the head. These are all great ways to make a fish look bigger than it is , or to put it another way, lie about a fish's size without saying a word. (The picture of Len Hartmens "World Record" is a great example of this.)

Danner, if your such a pro, then why don't you teach your brother how to properly hold a fish. Oh by the way what was the girth on that fish, any estimates on weight?

Jab; I'd be willing to bet that your fish is easy 41 inches. So called experts have let their pictures lie for years. I have 2 photos of a true 41 . If I can figure out how to use this scanner I will post both. The first is exactly as yours, the other is out in front of me, and appears to be much bigger. Keep in mind I'm 215lbs,which brings up another point made. You appear to be about 190lbs. and I can tell by the skinny legs on the other guy that he probally dont weigh 150lbs soakin wet. Im not saying the fish that he is jerking it"s gills of isnt 47, I'm just saying I know yours is 41.

These two pictures are more of a comparison in different ways to hold a fish than a debate on if someone lied or not.

Of course the 41"er is going to look smaller, the guy in the picture is practically wearing the musky as a belt - with the entire tail section obscured from the photo.

And of course the 47"er is gonna look huge. The tail of the fish is so close to the camera, I'm surprised there isn't slime on the camera lens.

Both are nice fish, and to be honest the 41"er doesn't LOOK like it's 41"s at all. But that's simply because of the way the photo was taken, not because anyone lied.

How cares???

I haven't seen the pic of the 41" fish, but have seen the 47" fish and yes it looks about right at 47" probably 25#'s or so....skinny little Illinois snake.
:D

Not to mention that, Danner, you didn't catch the fish anyway you hack..so shut your yapper till you can boat one of your own.

Danner65, I think that JAB's fish is a solid 41". Angle and distance to the camera is everything. Here's an example:
Which fish is bigger ??

or
http://www.kevinwakeman.com/sept62003b3.jpg

They're exactly the same length and weight.

Here's a better example:

Same fish, opposite ends of the boat.

And by the way, good manners never go out of style, even on the internet.

Wait a minute here! Let's go back to my original post. I specifically said that I am NOT putting anyone down due to my post. I'm not calling anyone a liar.

If JAB didn't hype-up and write a short story about the "monster" and "VERY FAT" muskie his friend landed, I could care less. But there sure was a lot of anticipation there.

Sorry guys, never meant to offend anyone. And again, getting back to the original post, I was not putting anyone down - just had an opinioin.

Danner,

Be happy in that you and your brother got a great fish. No need to get in a pis@#$% match and accuse someone else of having caught an admittedly smaller, but equally rewarding fish.

I wasn't going to comment on this thread because it's was getting so stupid, but then again, I can be as stupid as anyone sometimes! haha!

Has anybody taken a good look at Chris Kim's Shab record lately? It was only a couple of inches longer than Danner's 47"er but when you look at the two pics of the two fish. You might start to ask if danner isn't stretching his tape a little bit. My point is that a 6" inch difference between danner's 47"er (or whoever's since who the heck knows who caught the fish now) and JAB's 41"er is a huge difference. Just like two or three inches on a musky nearing 50" is a huge difference. I just noticed that when one sees musky that get into the high forty's and the fifties their girth becomes so substantial that they appear to dwarf even slightly shorter fish. Just take a look at those old lengendary black and white pics of 57"+ fish caught in the northwoods. Do they look like they're only 8 inches longer than than Chris Kim's record?

So as several folks have already said in their own way. "Simma' down now!" and enjoy your fish and let others enjoy theirs too.

I am happy to see all of the musky information that is shared on the site as I am learnign myself how to catch them. Sometimes threads like these seem to belong in the Dr. Ruth, does size matter category?

Anyway, hopefully this response is taken with some humor.

i caught it at lake of the woods (canada side) in late june. this was my first muskie trip. i think this was the third one i caught. it was also the biggest. i hooked one that i think was larger, but he shook it out at the boat side.

lol, no, i won the bait from another guy on the trip in a game of poker. this fish measured at 42 1/2". i dont know the weight of it, i didnt have a scale. but it did win me the prize money. we had a little pool going. longest fish won the cash. it just about paid for my trip to. i can't wait to hook into another big one!!

Wendell,

Are you a dwarf? That fish looks 49" at least. I find it hard to believe it is only 42.5" no matter how short you are - great fish!

wendall
10-07-2003, 08:06 AM
lol, thanks.......i think.

i am far from a dwarf i think. i am real thin, but not the least bit short. i am just shy of 6'. it does look alot bigger than 42". the only thing we had to measure it was a home made measuring stick. i trusted that my buddy marked off the inches on the stick correctly, but maybe i will check them to make sure. i need to make time to get out to shabbs and try to get a bigger one. anyone know what the "hot" baits are this time of year. i am still learning alot about these fish. it kind of upsets me that all this time i have been fishing for bass, and these monsters are swimming right along side them. oh well, such is life.
