Well I can see the claim for the land and how it MIGHT be disputed. But I'm also wondering what took them, what - 140 some odd years to claim it.

Should be interesting.

I think in our super sensitive, if you have so much as a broken fingernail, all sybolism and no substance, just whine a little and the powers that be will cave like a house of cards society that they'll be breaking ground before we know it. But I hope not.

How 'bout this; they're claiming rights to the land from 1840 or so and claim it was taken from them THEN, so we give them fair value for the land priced at the time it was allegedly taken.

Technically, using their rules, they could take over most if not all of the midwest since, after all, they are the original 'owners' (more like keepers) of the land we're all living and working on right this minute.

Gee - how long before this thread/post gets deleted?? :)

PS

One other thing for the legal types cruising this board.

Does a tribe need a state license for a casino or does it fall under some other fed/state rule that they don't because of the tribes status??? I figure if ol' Rich Daley can't get one, even with his buddy Rob in Springfield, what are the tribes chances in the middle of nowhere?

Well, at least it's not a riverboat on Shabbona Lake, then we'd have to decide, electric motors on the riverboat or change the lake to no wake.

As long as the riverboat has a 10HP or lower motor...I bet that discussion will be next.

I think what happened to that other post was exactly what the anti 10hp people wanted to happen to it. You don't see them whining about their First Amendment rights like they usually do, do you? Until I'm told different, this is my opinion. The only other thing that might have happened is that they were trying to delete one post and smoked the whole thread on accident.

As for the casino, I talked to one of the landowners today and he didn't seem to worried about it. They aren't going to take anybody’s land. He said they have an "option to buy" on some land in the area. They just need their claim substantiated to make it work.

No biggie at all. I posted last night about our wonderful football team and it got nuked - I only assume because it wasn't Shab related; that's cool, it is a privately owned board afterall.

Back to the subject.

I'm glad to hear that the tribe isn't sending or implying messages of takeover. Boy, wouldn't that be a bummer to bring the boat to the ramp and see the lake drained!!!:D DOH!!! Guess I'll have to start carrying a bucket of quarters with me just in case. ;)

All kidding aside, I hope, if this thing comes to fruition, that both sides will come to an agreement that benefits everyone without a lot of legal hassles.

"What do you call 10,000 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean????"

"A good start!!!" (I crack me up).

Getting out tomorrow evening to test the GPS and to fish. Couldn't get out over the weekend due to a bum foot and a hone-do list.

You would think that the indians would want to do something other than a Casino. It seems like they have nothing else to do or work for is this the American dream for indians Casino's?

If they get "tribal rights" to the lake, that means no fishing restrictions for them. Gill nets, spear fishing, no size or creel limits, etc. This will get interesting.

KW,

Good point.

I completely forgot about that. I know out west 'tribal rights' really do a number on the salmon. If that comes into play we might as well make Shab a CC forest preserve lake.

Forgot no-wake, they'll be no-fish.

Is it time to learn how to fish the Illlinois really well??

being an optomist i want to wait and see . it can go either way, they may leave the lake alone and HELP enhance it or put out up a keep out sign. if they just want a hotel and casino, it would be in the long run a great idea to make the lake better

Let's not forget the issue of light pollution. In the suburbs, it may be a moot point to try to get a new business to restrict it's outdoor lighting, as the night sky is almost completely lost already - but I'm sure the fine folks of Shabbona treasure the fact that they can walk out on any given summer night and be awash in the gentle glow of the milky way.

Kiss it goodbye (or at least part of it) if a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week casino comes into town. The state park is also used by numerous species of migratory birds along their route from Canada to the southern U.S. and back. Study after study has shown that a drastic, sudden increase in light pollution can cause these birds to become disoriented. Any nocturnal hunting animal in the park would also suffer (owls for instance) as the skyglow would cause them to be spotted by their prey much more easily.

Just thought I'd throw another log on the fire....

63 to be exact. Towers pop up north of Mendota (click here) (http://www.newstrib.com/main.asp?Search=1&ArticleID=10598&SectionID=1&SubSectionID=60&S=1) near Compton, which is southwest of Shabbona. They are at the intersection of I-39 and Chicago Road just south of the rest areas on 39, south of Rt. 30. They are going to take advantage of the winds that beat the lake and erode the shoreline. Too bad they can't take advantage of some of the hot air that is spewed around here from time to time.;) I have a picture, but I'm not sure I should post it? Some "J. Noble Daggett" type may not like that!

It was my understanding that the land was given to the Cheif alone not the whole tribe.
