View Full Version : Cool map site from Nxt......
This is a post (buried deep in some junk) from Nxtrecordholder.
IMHO I thought it was worthwhile enough that it should be brought up to the front of the board.
"If you are going to spend money on a fishing website, I HIGHLY recommend www.mapcard.com. This site is a highly accurate mapping website where you can create and print customizable maps. I use it to get highly accurate GPS coordinates for submerged humps, dropoffs, etc. There is also an aerial photograph option where the lake contours are overlayed onto an actual satellite image of the surrounding shoreline. It's also incredibly easy to measure distances, which takes the guess work out of a kayak/canoe trip. The satellite images also help in identifying where rapids or low water may lay ahead. All this for $20 (for the entire midwest, not just Wisconsin). And no, I am not affiliated with the site in any way, shape, or form. Just a fan of a great fishing tool."

This is AWESOME! Just got my GPS so it will be helpful. For just a little more than a Suick you can get access to a great site.
Thanks for info/tip!!!

No prob, TimK. When my wife gave me the subscription for a present, I wasn't too keen on the idea of a "pay for use" fishing site, but the capabilities of this particular site are incredible. Looks like I mis-spoke when I said the site was $20 for a year. That's what it was when I got it. Looks like the word is getting out now because it's up to $30 for a year. I believe there are some extra features as well that can elevate the price slightly higher. Still well worth it.
In the late Fall, I fish a musky tourney on the Lac du Flambeau chain. Some of the lakes in that chain have great underwater structure in the middle of big water. Tough/impossible to locate for someone who isn't familiar with the water. I just pointed and clicked my way to a customized map that contained GPS coordinates and depths of all the structure. Should save me TONS of time this Fall. And time is of the essence in a musky tourney (or any tourney for that matter).
I believe they have a free trial version. Try before you buy and give it a shot for free!
I'm going to try to attach a .jpeg of Shabbona that I created using Mapcard. Keep in mind that this is copyrighted material from another site - so please do not post this picture elsewhere, but I don't think they will mind as I'm using it as an example of their fine work, and the topography is nothing you can't find elsewhere on this site. I can obtain GPS coordinates and distances using simple point and click commands over the map. I can zoom in further as well.
To next record holder can you post the whole map the top or campground bay is cut off and so is dam area. Or post me direct that would be better. Thanks Jack

Buy Denny's map. It is way better and more detailed.
Ok, so I'm strolling through the local Wal-Mart, fishing section of course, and come across this neat internet access map site offered from our previously mentioned pals at MapCard. So I'm looking this thing over and it works like a phone card. You buy the card, it's activated at the register, you go home and go to the web site for, they say, over 10,000 lake topo maps.
Big deal? This card was only $9.98. This is cheap when you look at the website costs. And far cheaper than getting any two Hot Spots maps if you're heading to another lake you may not be so familiar with. It appears to give you all the good stuff the site does just at a cheaper price.
Not pushing the site but I thought that, for the price, it was a great deal that perhaps others would want to know about.

I didn't know that Walmart carried the cards. Good to see that the word is getting out on the website. My only complaint so far is that they don't have the Fox Chain topographically mapped yet. I sent them an email suggesting they do this, and they said they were working on it.
To Jack - I'm sorry but I can't post Mapcard's proprietary maps on any other fishing websites, this one included. I cut that map off on purpose, just so I could show everyone an example of the mapwork available at the site (without "giving away the cow for free"). The free maps available on this website do an excellent job detailing depths, too.
A word of caution about those Fishing Hot Spots maps - much of that information is now over 10 years old. The lake contours may not change much, but all the extra information on where and when to fish for various species certainly changes over the course of 10+ years. I'd hate to see a rank beginner use one of those maps as a 'holy grail' to where the fish are, only to be sorely dissapointed.
This website is by far the best source of information for what is biting and when at Shabbona. And best of all.....the price is right!
Question for TimK, what Walmart did you find this card at? I have been to a few Walmarts, and I haven't seen them.
Thanks! :)
Hobo,
They're at the Plano WallyWorld. Go into the fishing section near all the crankbaits and they're hanging on a card holder. Almost easy to miss because of their coloring but you'll see them if you're looking.
Good luck. Let us know how well it works if you end up getting one. I'm interested in it for lakes above the cheddar curtain.
Thanks.
Tim
