View Full Version : Getting Cooler
With fall fast approaching - at least this week - and the water temps eventually dropping, will Shab go through a turnover?
Or does the small amount of constantly flowing water into the lake keep the water on a pretty even keel between freezes?
Also, if it does turnover what's the fishing like during that time?
Thanks!

Thats a good question. Before I left for school the thermocline had seemed yet to form. i dont know how hot it has been recently but unless the water temp really heated up then i doubt one did form. since there is no thermocline i dont think that there will be a turnover or at least as dramatic as when there is a thermocline. I could be wrong on this but thats just always been my belief, maybe someone else knows for sure.
Good point. I know the highest surface temp I recorded was around 79 or so. The lake pretty much averaged 76/77/78 whenever I went out, again - at the surface. Never took a reading farther down.
I was just reading something that stated if you find the 70 degree line fish will hold around that temp. I don't know if that's significant enough to create a thermocline but I wouldn't doubt with this years murkier water that somewhere down there it was nice and cool.
I'm sure that despite this weeks weather the surface temp is probably still up there. I'll have to tie a string onto my fishing thermometer and see what it's like down below this weekend.
I'll let everyone know what I find. I have a new GPS to play with on Shab so as I mark the spots this weekend I'll try to take some temps too.

I'm fairly sure that a thermocline was present this year, seemed to be about 16 - 18 feet deep. Turnover won't occur until the surface temp reaches about 55 degrees. Fishing will usually shut down for a week or two once the lake has turned. The fish should become very active right before turn over on the uper half. Once the lake turns and that 1 -2 week window passes look for the big girls to be relating to bottom structure down deep. Rock Piles, Bridges and Foundations would all be good spots. Just my two pennies, Pinks
Thanks for the info. I'm more accustomed to fishing rivers so the change is something new for me.
My god!! A thread without people nearly threatening to kill each other!!! What has this become?? A fishing board?? :)
