I see most sites are first-come-first-serve. On a typical weekend in August, how early do campsites start to fill up? Do I need to be there crack-of-dawn Friday, or just sometime Friday, to get a nice site? (Lake view, towards the playground for the kids.) Suggestions?
Going on Thursday is your best bet if you want your choice of site. Check out time is 2 or 3pm (I can't remember), so getting there early on a Friday won't help too much unless the prime sites weren't taken on Thursday. We've gone on Thursday morning, put a tent on the site (required), and paid the extra night to get a good site, and came back on Friday. There are only a couple lake-view sites, two are the cabins, two others are reservable, so that doesn't leave too many.

We have found that it is well worth the extra trip to go and "stake out" a nice spot on Thurday afternoon/evening. That way there is less stress(no hurry and less to do once you do arrive) on get-away day.
